The Mighty Kite Hunter

Setting: Outside the apartment on a leisurely sunday evening with a light breeze.
We, and some friends of our built some kites at a kite clinic at the school on Friday. Tonight we were all flying them together. The strings were not nearly long enough to get the kites as high as we wanted to. So we tied strings together to get them longer and longer. Eventually we got the kite high enough that the wind snapped the string (those of you who are familiar with Rexburg wind will not be surprised about this). We watched the kite slowly float toward the ground while we talked about how fun it would be to go chase it. Then I jumped on my motorcycle and went after it. I demonstrated my skills of observation and riding my motorcycle at the same time and I located the kite, still flying a little over a mile away. It was in a field on the other side of a barbed wire fence. I jumped the fence in my sunday clothes and ran to the kite which was still flying away from me. It turns out the kite was still attached to the string and the string was catching on things and keeping the kite flying. I grabbed the kite string an wrapped it up. Then I had to get it home on the motorcycle. Problem easily solved: Fly it home.

That's how they do it in Texas

As if I needed to make things a little more stressful for myself. Friday was the deposit deadline for securing a seat at Texas Tech Law School. Has anybody ever gotten the day off for Good Friday? Apparently they do in Texas. So I called them to pay the deposit over the phone. Of course nobody answered. That left me all weekend to be stressed about it. I think I handled it well though. I didn't dwell on it much. Well, now it's monday morning and I just called admissions. They gratefully accepted my deposit and assured me that they were not going to withdraw anybody right away. I guess that's just how they do it in Texas. Thank goodness.

Conference Call

Right now I'm on a conference call for work. If any of you are not familiar with what a conference call is it is when a group of people get on the phone together and a couple of them talk to each other while the rest of us work on other things and pretend to listen. I think I'm the only one who is at home doing the call on skype so I'm way too comfortable to be working.  I figured I would use this down time to set up a blog.
